There are thousands upon thousands of Internet marketing tips available online today but most of them unfortunately come from people who are anything but experienced enough in order to be able to offer solid advice. With the rise in popularity of the using the Internet as a method of making money, so to has there been an increase in the number of people who are offering all sorts of Internet marketing tips.

Now more than ever, it is extremely important to cut through the swathe of rubbish that gets written by the many thousands of people who don't really understand marketing in general. Instead, you need to focus on a handful of authoritative sources and fortunately for you and for the online future of your business, we’re here to help.

Always Have an Upsell

What is an upsell? There really is no strict definition, it can be many things. But, generally, what you are looking for is the creation of a service, upgrade or product that you can sell to a customer after he or she has purchased something. This should be tightly linked to what that person has already purchased since at the end of the day, understanding the needs of your customers is what marketing is all about.

This is where many fail when it comes to the upsell. While it is one of the strongest marketing strategies out there, doing everything right can be a bit tricky. Too many people simply offer any old thing (a product only lightly linked to the one that has been bought) and then hope that the customers reach for their wallets. That isn't really upselling, simply putting an advert in front o the customer is just not going to cut it.

Time to Really Upsell

An upsell is not about simply asking for another purchase. Understanding the needs of your customers can and will make the difference between earning money by giving your customers what they need and ruining your credibility.

Put yourself in their shoes for a moment. They have just purchased an item, let’s say it is a book on model railways. Do you think that offering them a romantic novel afterwards would be a good idea? That is not upselling, that is simply selling.

In order to do it right, you should to think about what the person needs, something that would truly compliment the book. To continue with our example, you know that the people purchasing the model railway book are interested in model railways, so use that knowledge to find them something they will want to buy from you: it’s not complicated unless you make it complicated. In this case, consider offering something relevant to their hobby: maybe some tracks or terrain, maybe a different model railway book and so on.

Maximizing Profits

An upsell is a proven and very powerful way of “upping” the amount of money you are making because you are not only pitching to people who have already made a buying decision (half the battle when it comes to Internet marketing), you are also pitching items that you know they are interested in.

Therefore, the likelihood that they are going to buy those items as well is very high, far higher than when it comes to the average person browsing your website. This can mean a dramatic upturn in sales, and therefore in profits.

In fact, many Internet marketers offer the initial products as 'loss leaders', items that are not generating any direct profits. The idea behind this concept is that such low prices will convince people to start being in a buying mood and you can then start making money on the upsell.

Make sure that you don't just take it on board, but that you truly understand what it means to upsell and then put that into practice. Do so properly and you will see your profits sour.
